A 25-year-old Muslim youth, Arbaaz Mulla was brutally murdered in Belagavi of Karnataka for allegedly having an interfaith love affair with a Hindu girl by a Hindutva group Ram Sena. After the murder, the mutilated body of Arbaaz was found near the railway track of Khanapur. When the information about the matter spread in the surrounding area, there was a stir.
Allegations of receiving threatening calls
According to the family members of the deceased, Arbaaz was murdered when he had gone to meet Hindutva organization named Shri Ram Sena on September 28 after a phone call from them. It is alleged that the innocent was allegedly killed there. The family members told Scoop Beats that they were informed about the death by the Railway Police on the phone, in which the police had told that Arbaaz died due to suicide and the body was lying on the railway track.
Arbaaz used to earn by selling second hand cars after he lost his father several years ago . He was currently living with his mother.
Serious allegations against Hindutva organization
The Railway Police has arrested eight people for their alleged involvement in the murder of Arbaaz. Police have also reportedly seized an ambulance with the words ‘Shri Ram Sena Hindustan’ written on the windshield, near the crime scene. Belagavi police, who are probing Arbaaz’s call records, have revealed that he had received a call from an army leader on the day of his murder. The names of three people, including the girl’s father, Maharaj and Birje, are included in the FIR registered at the Railway Police Station in Belagavi.
Family denies suicide, alleges murder
Arbaaz’s relative Sameer told Faisal that he was receiving death threats from several Hindutva groups, including the Shri Ram Sena, due to the ongoing love affair between Arbaaz and a Hindu girl. Sameer says, “My brother was getting constant death threats from Shri Ram Sena. He had warned my brother that ‘leave the Hindu girl or else we will kill you.'”
Arbaaz’s family members say that, “This is not a case of suicide but a ruthless murder.” When they found Arbaaz’s body, his hands were tied with rope and there were marks of his body being cut in many different parts. Arbaaz’s mother has also alleged in her complaint that she was receiving death threats from Hindutva groups because of the ongoing love affair which ultimately led to her son’s death.
Muslim organization demanded a fair investigation
After this incident, there is resentment among the local people and Tipu Sultan Sangharsh Samiti, a group of Muslim activists of the area, has given a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner regarding the matter. Describing it as a case of hate crime, the district president of the committee, Arif Katgari said that Muslims are being killed sometimes in the name of cow and sometimes in the name of love jihad. He said that all the evidence is there against the killers of Arbaaz. And they have demanded that the culprits should be given the harshest punishment.
Who is this Shri Ram Sena?
Shri Ram Sena was founded in the 1960s by Kalki Maharaj, said to be Bal Thackeray’s right hand, and a former member of the Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad.
On 24 August 2008, an exhibition of MF Hussain’s paintings was vandalized by Shri Ram Sena in Delhi.
On 27 October 2008, the Samajwadi Party central office in New Delhi was ransacked by workers of Shri Ram Sena.
The name of Ram Sena had also cropped up during the investigation of the 2006 Malegaon terror blasts.
In January 2012, seven people were arrested from Sena in Bijapur, Karnataka, for raising Pakistan’s national flag on a government building. They were charged with trying to create tension in the town, which has a sizeable Muslim population.
